With its luscious bundles of burgundy-pink, seedless fruits, the Canadice Grape Vine (Vitis Canadice) is delicious for eating on its own or turned into jellies and jams. This easy-to-grow, self-pollinating, and disease-resistant grape vine reaches 15-20 feet tall and wide, needing the support of a pergola or trellis. The Canadice Grape ripens in a variety of climates, typically reaching peak ripeness early to mid-September. This grape vine is very productive, producing up to 45 bundles or 20-40 pounds of grapes when mature. Canadice Grape Vine Care The Canadice Grape Vine thrives in full sun and slightly acidic, well-draining soil. Plant this grape vine in the spring to allow the roots plenty of time to grow before the winter. In its first year, water the Canadice Grape Vine regularly and deeply, taking care to only soak the roots and avoid wetting the leaves. Each vine will need about 6 feet of space to grow, and when planting multiple vines, space the Canadice Grape 8-15 feet from others. Growing Canadice Grape VineThe Canadice Grape Vine will begin producing fruit after its third year. Pruning is of particular importance when growing grapes; prune Canadice in the early spring before leaves emerge to open the branches up, increasing light and air flow to the plant. Grape flowers and fruits develop during the previous year, so spring pruning is needed to encourage new growth without damaging those existing buds. While grape vines can be grown in containers, they will likely not reach their natural mature size. Potted grapes will also need more regular water and fertilizer, and should be brought into a protected space in the winter. Provide a sturdy support for the vines when growing Canadice in containers and in a garden.Watering Canadice Grape VineOnce the surface of the soil is dry, water the Canadice Grape Vine deeply, especially in the first year. Place a soaker hose over the roots and allow the water to seep into the soil for several minutes. Feeding Canadice Grape VineThe Canadice Grape Vine will benefit from yearly applications of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Apply a small amount of fertilizer in the first year as leaves emerge, and gradually increase the amount of fertilizer applied each year, spreading it out over a wider root area.
