description
Carnosa Hoya is commonly known as Porcelain flower or wax flower/plant. You often hear this plant referred to by its Latin name over its common name. Hoya carnosa is known for its sweetly fragrant, star-shaped flowers of pink and white that hang upside down and get sticky with nectar. This hoya has curly vining stems with a trailing habit with glossy, dark-green foliage speckled with white. There are variegated varieties of Hoya carnosa as well. The compact version of this plant is known as the rope plant. There are several cultivars of Hoya carnosa that are readily available. Hoya carnosa is in the family asclepiadaceae or the milkweed family and originates from East Asia.Best Locations For Growing Carnosa HoyaCarnosa Hoyas are wonderful trailing houseplants that will look nice in many places in your home. Their cascading habit makes them gorgeous in hanging baskets or on top of a cabinet or shelf where their foliage can drape down gracefully. Hoyas are not toxic to pets or humans.Carnosa Hoya Sunlight RequirementsCarnosa prefers bright indirect light as an indoor houseplant, but will tolerate a variety of light conditions. Carnosa will not flower in low light, as the plant requires bright light to flower. If placed outdoors, Carnosa Hoya should be protected from too much full sun as the leaves may burn; choose a location with part sun or shade. Carnosa Hoya CareCarnosa Hoyas are fast growers but are a bit sensitive to care for. They should be kept at 65 degrees F, in 50% humidity, and benefit from a humidifier and/or misting of their foliage. Carnosa will only bloom if pot bound and if light is sufficient. The plants take 2-3 years to set buds and bloom, so be patient when growing this hoya. Once this plant begins to bloom, do not move the plant. It is very sensitive to light and moisture changes and can drop flower buds if adjusted; dont move your hoya if it has budded. Flower buds might drop if the soil is too wet or dry. Repot when root bound, about every 2-3 years, and do not repot when blooming. If you want to keep the habit of your Carnosa Hoya small, prune vines in early spring. Be careful not to prune stems that have previously flowered because the next flower buds are set on those stems. Let their soil dry out completely between watering. Watering Carnosa HoyaCarnosa Hoya likes a humid environment but its succulent-like leaves allow it to have lower watering needs. Hoyas do not like to be overwatered. Carnosa requires well-draining soil and a pot with a drainage hole. Let the soil of your Carnosa Hoya dry out between waterings. Insert your finger into the soil about an inch or so, if the soil is dry beneath the surface, your hoya requires water. Feeding Carnosa HoyaHoya benefits from a house plant fertilizer high in potassium once or twice a month. Carnosa Hoya does not go dormant in the winter but the growth does slow; fertilizer application should be reduced at this time to match the plants growth rate.
