Well-drained soil is essential, especially in winter. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH between 6.5 and 7.5 works best. In heavier soils, set the root ball slightly higher than grade to prevent moisture from collecting at the crown. Water deeply during establishment, then allow the soil to dry between soaks, as butterfly bush resents prolonged damp conditions.
